Patron Saints/Famous Saints of the Community
Our namesake, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, is patroness of Catholic schools and one of our biggest intercessors. We aspire to continue the great work that she started in urban, Catholic education in America, and we visit her historical convent and shrine every year. Mother Teresa founded her first American convent in our Mott Haven neighborhood in the South Bronx, and we love to visit the sisters that still work there today. Lastly, our school in Cincinnati, Ohio, Romero Academy Resurrection, is named for St. Oscar Romero, who we look to as an example of the Christian fight against poverty and for social justice in the modern day.
Charism/Apostolate
Seton Teaching Fellows is a program of a nationwide nonprofit called Seton Education Partners, serving its mission to help children in urban areas develop the knowledge, character, and faith necessary to earn a college degree, pursue lives of value and integrity, and become saints. Seton Teaching Fellows gives young people the opportunity to serve in some of the poorest areas of America--to share in the call of the New Evangelization through education. All Fellows teach or work in some capacity at Seton network schools and live in an intentional faith community. They share the love of Christ with the margins of society and experience professional and spiritual formation alongside the students they serve.
History
In August 2013, Seton Education Partners launched El Camino, an extended day faith and enrichment program, to serve children in the South Bronx who do not have the means to attend a Catholic school. To support this incredible work, Seton created Seton Teaching Fellows, an opportunity for college graduates to serve for one or two years in the South Bronx. The results have been astounding. Since 2013, we have catechized so many families, and baptised 118 of our Bronx students! Now in its seventh year, Seton Teaching Fellows has expanded to serve our schools in the North Bronx, and at Romero Academy Resurrection in the Price Hill neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Prayer Life
Fellows receive weekly spiritual formation based on John Paul II's four types of formation: Human/Communal, Intellectual, Apostolic, and Sacramental. They also live in intentional faith communities with other young Catholics in the neighborhood in which they serve, and attend 3 retreats every year.
Traditions
At Seton, we pride ourselves on our school and staff culture. In fact, each year, the incoming cohort of Seton Teaching Fellows start their onboarding with a full week dedicated to traditions surrounding community and spiritual development! Among the many traditions both in the schools and in the fellows communities themselves, we always collaborate with the religious orders in our different geographies. We have partnerships with the Dominican House of Cincinnati, the CFR's of the South Bronx, and the Sisters of Life in the Bronx. We also love to engage the Catholic young adult groups in the cities our fellows serve in! To name just a few that we love: Catholic NYC, the Frassati fellowship of NYC, FOCUS, and the Cincinnati Frassati Fellowship.
